Today marks Diversity Day, officially known as “The World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development”. The day was created as an opportunity to help communities understand the value of cultural diversity and learn how to live together in harmony. Is it true that we are diverse? Or are we all the same? What is the difference? Shakespeare said, “If you prick me do I not bleed? If you tickle me do I not laugh? (William Shakespeare, Merchant of Venice). How much of a multicultural difference is there? What about cultural diversity at the work place or in our schools? An understanding and acceptance of other cultures offers us abundant opportunities to learn from and share with others for an even richer world.

What is one key ingredient that we can add to this diverse cultural mix that produces harmony in schools, workplaces or communities? Consider the concept of Seva from the Sikh culture
. Seva is a concept that means selfless service for altruistic purposes – it is service on behalf of, and for the betterment of the community.
Seva is simply being of service to others. Seva in its purest form can be the most meaningful of gifts like kindness, patience, and acceptance of others. Seva extends beyond the individual and embraces all of humanity.
The fine points of Seva are simple – it is about seeking out and validating others in a positive manner regardless of race, culture or religion. Giving, helping and sharing towards others without expectation of rewards. But be assured you will receive a reward.

I hope this video from the last Abundance in a Box event inspires you, “to smile at everyone” in the wake of Diversity Day. You might also like this video. Wishing you a very happy day of giving and planting seeds of Seva!
